ERS's miniature software platform for real-time pervasive computing is considered to be an important technological innovation and a major leap towards powerful low-cost detection, monitoring and control applications.

The platform consists of miniature nodes that use software building blocks, a software component methodology and wired or wireless communication to collect data in real-time. This data is then logged and displayed and made available on a network.

The software components are designed for modularity and reconfigurability.
